CHARLIE WARNER
Question 1: In what ways does your media project use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
TITLING AND CHARACTERIZATION
From the outset of our final task, our group developed and re-created conventions of real media products; mainly through the use of titling and freeze frames as presented in a real, successful British film in that of 'Snatch'. One of the conventions we believed to have achieved through our final project included the accurate characterization of the group we portrayed through different actions and freeze frames in order to capture the unique personality of each member to unite them as a mischievous, rather than criminal group which often leads to a like-ability factor the audience enjoy to watch. I believe, from my research that we successfully manipulated the character of 'Naughty Nancy' in our opening sequence to present the female character in following the traditional British stereotype in a feminist manner.
COSTUME
We started off with Jess in a tracksuit as her daily costume to contrast against female stereotypes as we wanted the group to fit in as a unit and not stand out from one another through appearance at first until after the freeze frame introductions as we felt it would have been much less effective, however towards the final sequences Nancy changes into a smarter, more flirtatious attire as we felt this is the only way we could present her specialty of stealing to still make a comedic scene, with the stereotypical elder brother watching other at all times as you would see at 1:45 of the final video. We tried to make this discrete and smooth which we believed worked particularly well compared to most of the other parts of the production. 'Top dog Terry' was another difficult choice of expertise as we wanted to pull away from the traditional big muscled protagonist of whom pushed his weight around to be respected as shown in many other British films; instead we attempted to present the character in a more intelligent, manipulating manner whilst also maintaining comedic values although always looking 'slick' and 'cool' no matter the situation, with this being a teenaged targeted audience it would seem irrelevant to use brawn and strength to show power as popularity is the main trait for young British society as we would experience ourselves. Also with the heaviest 'common' accent, i would have probably been the best role for the protagonist as my voice fitted more accordingly more-so than the other characters that could have fitted the role.
Unlike the unique aspects of 'Naughty Nancy' and 'Top dog Terry', both 'Slimy Simon' and 'Billy the Brick' are not to be left out; both were presented in a different way to portray their own characterization however they were targeted more at the traditional stereo types of brawn and no brain with Shokies character, the Alliteration in both characters presents them more as a comedic wing-man rather than a main character. However just like in snatch both characters are presented in a smooth transitional manner when introduced in a freeze frame, with short, fast cuts to emphasise the action behind their mischief.
LOCATION
We were ambitious in creating a professional environment in that we traveled to Cold Harbor, an estate off the edge of New Eltham, which creates a run-down environment in which we thought successfully pulled off for us in the final task; with flats and council-type housing in the surroundings, as you would see in films such as 'Kidulthood' or most stereotypically 'AnuvaHood'.
MISE EN SCENE
We tried to grasp the Mise en scene of the product by portraying less wealthy characters through use of location, tracksuits and objects such as ash trays and beer cans in attempt to create an environment of a worse off child-hood, given general stereotypes in films of the British genre itself.
British Film is usually a very gritty, sensitive genre in which often taboo subjects are picked upon to make the audience feel on edge and provide emphasis towards the main protagonists of whom are usually perceived in a vulnerable, run down way. Although in our project we came from a different perspective in the comedic, likeable value that is relevant to such films mentioned above, using synchronized effective use of costume and objects to portray the characters in a less wealthy yet youthful manor.
SOUND DIAGETICS
The sound above all worked most coherently throughout the video, we used an old style backing score of 'A town called Mallice' by 'The Jam' to create an upbeat, smooth transitional feel to the video, although in most British films voice overs are common; we believed that a voice over would be unnecessary and less effective as the storyline was already clearly portrayed.

Camera Shots+ Angles
The camera shots we used ranged from standard cuts in a fast motion to create fast match on action between shots to increase the liveliness and mood to the final project. For our establishing shot we tried to perform a fairly slow zoom out in which took trial shots, although it proved to be effective when introducing the characters in a group. We had to use different shots and camera movement techniques to create a strong sense of continuity and so we performed such techniques explained in the video below such as swish pans, and natural ideas such as zooming into the sun light we had and zooming out from a bathroom light of which Jess was doing her make-up with. Our video below clearly states all representations and effective points of discussion we tried to pick upon during the film.

Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Continuously over the course of our project we attempted to present social class as a juxtaposition against usual expected stereotypes, however some aspects of our video fell into the traditional stereotypes as it wouldn't work without it; the main focuses of our project were heavily based on Gender, age and ethnicity, attempting to make this oppose usual stereotypes proved to be difficult yet achievable by the final outcome.
The main stereotype we tried to go against throughout the course of the project arose from Gender issues; we were originally set on having 4 main male characters in the sequence to show a high level of bonding, growing up from a young age; although to put Jess into the video we went against GENDER stereotyping by using her as the protagonists sister. As the younger sister she was still seen to be a less powerful character in the scene however with being in the first scene she is seen to be more important and involved than the other 2, with more emphasis on her character we attempted to first show her as a working class, run-down teenager as expected in an urban environment, whilst regaining the stereotypical female aspects in a way through her male manipulation towards the end of the scene and her stealing the seemed to be upper class, rich man; the stereotype shows how younger, working class adults can take advantage of the less street wise, wealthier social groups in so the sequence was short and sweet. 'Naughty Nancy' was also presented in a cheeky manner to characterize the usual working class personality traits of being in a working unit constantly every day.
Although we believed to have presented this contrast in social groups well, i feel it was slightly unrealistic as you are unlikely to find characters of a higher class in an estate, run-down environment as they are clearly vulnerable an innocent to the situation. Especially in the necklace robbery scenario i feel the upper class female character looked too out of place in the scene with a very subtle necklace that we has thought to have been bigger, a young upper class female wouldnt usually be in an urban estate environment however the contrast in both characters worked accordingly moving away from the unrealistic manner as the working class are seen to take advantage of the higher class generally in society whether it be robbery, politics or street wise antics.
We also picked up upon ethnicity within the project in firstly a stereotypical way as 'Billy the Brick' was black; and with black males often being portrayed as the main physical criminals in todays society it was difficult to subvert away from general stereotypes as he was the largest character and so we though he should fill the role of the muscle and idiotic character. This contrasted with 'top dog terry' the main protagonist, as he was thoughtful towards the way he stole and got around situations whilst maintaining the resilience to push the group forward in stealing; being the main instigator of the firm is usually what you would expect of that from a small, white witty character who manipulates the less intelligent members of the group. However we began to subvert from the idea of stereotypical ethnic values as we had the young white female approaching the elder looking black male in the pub scenario; usually in British films we see the white, young female being victimised and put in a vulnerable position however here, we see the complete opposite as he is manipulated and finally thieved before the female character leaves the bar with his wallet.
We picked up on gender as one of our main social groups that we kept as a traditional stereotype mainly throughout the project; however stated before we were going to use 4 male characters and reverted back to 3 in order to present a female in an opposite manner to which you would see in everyday life today, 'Naughty Nancy' is a powerful, manipulative character in the project and we utilized this to show the different values women have away from the physical impossibilites compared to men in which they could get their way in life. However the gender cast was pro-dominantly male as in todays British film society, regardless wether it is ethically wrong or not, British films are still distributed authoritatively as a male dominant environment as it effectively emphasises all traits ranging from brawn and muscle to manipulation and deception as men are perceived to have many different roles in life when stepping into an estate type hierachy. The boss in 'Dave' being a fully grown man shows the immediate power over the teenagers and reverting back to age how teenagers can be abused to do bad things in society, influenced by the wrong characters is what we tried to aim for in the project. There is always a 'Top Dog' and although the protagonist is nick named so, the real boss of the hierachy is Dave as he is most physically intimidating and powerful, which is what causes the teenagers to form into the characters they are in the film.
Overall i believe we successfully conveyed many social groups we wished to target over the project whilst maintaing some stereotypical aspects to keep it as a clear, smooth British film with traditional values generated mainly through the backing score.

Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why
In terms of distribution, it is clear to see revolver are an amazing source for producing the majority of British films; ranging from the gritty down side films such as Adulthood, Ill manors etc, which introduces characters in a way teenagers or young adults can relate to, in the same way we wished to present the characters in a form of a power hierarchy, with the males being more powerful dependent on their status, popularity, strength, ethnicity and age. Revolver would be the prime target for distribution for our film as it is a prioritized British genre based film which would be the best option when producing our project. Our project is based on a robbery set in an urban environment with little wealth in the surroundings, in the real film we would project for the characters to be constantly on the move, in attempt to evade the main antagonist Dave, whilst maintaining the ability to earn from their thieving ways, in so building an empire of which more subtle characters are introduced into their world as they cross it.
Another film productions i researched on a larger scale are a more known organization in Columbia productions, as they produce the main James Bond films which we almost reenacted through our preliminary task. The same feel from James Bond of the lively, fast paced sequences followed up and had a knock on effect on our project as we tried to re-create the genre in the same style. The fast paced, happy-go luck score increases the mood to the genre and leaves the audience to like the character even though the protagonist may be committing a heavy crime such as attempting to burgle someones house, as seen comically in our final video.
Overall, i believe that Revolver are the best company for us in distributing the final video, as they have proved to be the success behind the main British films, with teenage Brit films being pro-dominant in this industry i would believe our project if created as a 90 minutes film would become a successful one if looking past the horizon in terms of reality.

Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media
product?
product?
Bring a big fan of British film myself, having seen all British films possible such as 'football factory', 'adulthood', 'this is England' and so on, i heavily believe that the main target audience for our group would be that of which enjoy films such as 'Anuvahood' (a comedic, stereotypical laughing stock production made to immitate everyday urban scenarios, whilst also keeping a gritty sense to the film as it would keep the audience on edge as everything the characters do would be of a 'Touch N' Go' manner. Having said this i believe this would attract to elder teenagers ranging from about 14-24 year olds who could relate to the film in many senses they may have found themselves doing in an everyday scenario. However, this is not pulling away from the fact it could appeal to anyone else who enjoyed comedic values which is a popular genre globally, i believe mainstream robbery films are made to be some of the greatest and highest rated films made as it constantly keeps a lively and edgy mood to the production whilst maintaining a likeability to the characters furthermore.

Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?
The audience we aimed for ranging in the teenage to adult category was very difficult to please as we knew we would be creating a video which would target those who are not usually interested, therefore from our final pitch we went away to form our characters into a likeable manner in which we could then utilize to attract a young adult audience or even elder adult audience as we included comedic values of a stereotypical type throughout the sequence. The silly scenes we imposed in the final video attracted the audience as we presented the film in a cheeky, smiley fashion that left the audience of any age feeling happy too. The film wasn't too mature filmed yet went into the rebellious category so the mischief is clearly shown throughout the video; with the representations of the characters shown to emphasize with each of them as you can feel the adrenaline they possess through the atmosphere created during the project. With quick shots and transitions, the video keeps the audience highly attentive as if you miss anything, you would not understand the baseline of the story and so we tried to make the film so that the audience would not feel bored at all during the viewing.

Question 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the
process of constructing this product?
process of constructing this product?
Imovie was one of the most difficult technologies to get to grips with from the outset; taking many attempts to succeed in creating professional-styled videos, however i believe i have picked up many skills from this programme and adapted to the fast paced tasks we have been set in the past. For our group in particular, our video wouldnt have worked at all if not dependant on iMovie as the main aspects of our video arose from the editing and transitional factors to transform a boring, standard video into a lively, comedic opening to a British film which my group and I have spent hours on end using to perfect our project entirely. I believe this is the most vital source to our success however we could have exceeded into greater success with the accessabiltiy to the more expensive programme such as 'Final-Cut Pro'.
Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in progression from this to the full product?
From the outset of the preliminary task i feel i have a learnt a lot about all aspects of British genre, although mainly the use of technologies and transitions we can actually induce in order to create a successful final task.
To Summarize:
I have learnt a lot about editing and transitioning techniques in order to create a smoother feel to the video you are trying to create; this can seem irritating and time consuming however without the time and effort, the video is always going to look less professional or just plain stupid. This lead me to discovering many new ways of capturing the scene we tried to set, however in the future i plan to make sure the shots are planned and organized as without a plan, disaster always strikes
Another lesson i have learned from the project is that planning is vital and without back-up shots or extra shots just in case, your group is always going to find difficulties and re-shooting becomes a drama; due to the fact people within the group become demotivated to act in a positive way and spend less time helping others, making excuses or going away for a week to make shooting schedules a nightmare, then wonder why the group become demotivated after. I believe i was a very strong character into the production of the video, with the initial idea and passion for the genre i would feel disheartened to get less credit than ANY other member of the group.
MISE EN SCENE
this was a major issue from the outset and it is crucial this is researched and planned effectively; without a strong location and clear costume, characters become less liked and heartened with when put together poorly; however with our group, i believe that we had planned effectively costume wise, however having to re-shoot with no extras and location in the FIFA scene became an issue, and so we added an ash tray, beer can and iPhone to present a poorly, run-down characterized possession.
Overall i believe that our group made an effective video that made the targeted audience feel happy and engaged; however next time, i am going definitely going to be more knowledgeable and organized in creating a video, coming out with more ideas and technological awareness it will be a much smoother transition and i am confident i have become a great media candidate with good potential in making less errors and contribute with higher authority next time.
